Summiting local storytelling

Local photographer grows intimate slide show to public presentation with freeskiing feature film premiere

What: Mount Fairweather slide show

When: Thursday, Nov. 15, 8:30 p.m.

Where: Garibaldi Lift Company (GLC)

Admission: Free

The real celebration didn’t take place when three Whistler-Blackcomb ski patrollers summitted B.C.’s highest peak, but instead on the last day of the trip when the local boys spent 12 hours negotiating their way down crumbling ice falls to safety.

“It was a sense of accomplishment,” said adventurer and photographer Duncan MacKenzie. “It was a great feeling, but it didn’t last long. We were more worried about getting off the glacier.”

MacKenzie will share his adventures at a narrated slide show on Thursday, Nov. 15 at 8:30 p.m. at the Garibaldi Lift Company. The photo-storytelling journey will be followed by the Canadian premiere of Coreshot Films’ latest feature ski flick, Linescore: A Freeskiing Documentary.

MacKenzie and friends spent three weeks climbing Mount Fairweather in honour of the 50th anniversary of the mountain first being climbed and the 100th year anniversary of the B.C. Mountaineering Club.

Mount Fairweather is located in Glacier Bay National Park in Alaska and while the majority of the mountain lies within the U.S., the summit is located in Tatshenshini-Alsek Park in B.C.

“It was extremely gnarly terrain,” MacKenzie said. “We lucked out with weather though. We only had one storm.”

Despite its name, Mount Fairweather is as famous for its hostile weather as it is for being the highest peak in the province.

The team of three flew into Alaska, starting their climb at 2,000 feet. A four-day climb got the team to base camp at 10,000 feet, where they acclimatized for another four to five days before climbing for the summit at 15,400 feet.

MacKenzie has previously hosted informal slide shows of his past climbs, such as Mount Waddington, but with more and more friends, and friends of friends, inquiring about this year’s show, he decided to grow his buddy gathering to a larger event.

Coreshot Films signed on, adding big mountain skiing adventures to the night. The documentary follows three athletes who competed in the U.S. Freeskiing Tour last winter. The film also features local skier Brett Crabtree.

Doors open at 7 p.m. with the slide show at 8:30 p.m. and the feature film screening at 9:15 p.m.

Admission is free.

Booking new library fundraiser with fondue and wine

The Pemberton Library is throwing the book at a new event this year with Friends of the Library moving their annual Wine and Cheese event to coincide with the opening of the new facility this fall.

The new fall fundraising event is entitled Wines and Tines and will be on Friday, Nov. 30 at the Big Sky Golf and Country Club in Pemberton.

“We’re as committed as ever to producing the traditional wine and cheese, but given our current needs, we decided to produce a more upscale event,” said Marnie Simon, chair of Friends of the Library’s New Chapter Campaign.

Guests will plunge into fantastic fondue along with wines paired for the elegant gala by Whistler-Blackcomb executive chef James Linklater and sommelier Steve Hitchins. The evening uncorks with a raclette and bubbly reception followed by three fondue courses and complimentary wines.

To help attain the New Chapter Campaign’s goal of raising $80,000 by spring 2008, to offset the cost of furnishing the new library, a live auction will be held throughout the night, giving guests the opportunity to win getaway packages such as a two-day, catered vacation for up to eight people at the Callaghan Lodge and a week’s accommodation in a luxury condo in Puerto Vallarta for up to eight guests.

Tickets are $125 and are available by contacting Christine Timm at 604-894-1524 or cmtimm@telus.net . Tickets are also available at the Pemberton and District Library, currently located at the old community centre.
