WCSS food drive this weekend

Food bank well used at this time of year

Whistler Community Services Society will be organizing a food drive this weekend, from 4 to 6 p.m. Nov. 24 and 25, for the Whistler Community Services Food Bank.

Look for volunteers standing outside of IGA and Nesters on the weekend. They will be looking for cash donations; food will be accepted as well.

November and early December are a hard time of year for a lot of people and the food bank is very well used.

Newcomers experience a huge time lag between when they are required to get here to find accommodations and their first paycheque, as most jobs don't start until the mountains open, or later. Many employees don't see their first paycheque until about two months after they arrive.

But some long-term residents also feel the pressure, if their hours are reduced during the slow season.

Most people see Whistler as an affluent community and don’t realize the number of people who rely on the food bank, particularly at this time of year. The Whistler Community Services Society asks you to keep them in mind this weekend.

Santa’s Helpers return with hampers

Whistler Community Services Society will also be organizing the Christmas hamper program again this year.

This is a great way for a company or family to spread the Christmas spirit and enjoy the gift of giving. Anyone interested in putting together a hamper for a family in need, or donating the cash equivalent, should contact WCSS.

Families feeling a little financially crunched this season who could benefit from a Christmas hamper are also invited to contact WCSS.

And anyone who knows of a family that may benefit from this program is asked to have the family contact WCSS. The organization often finds that families in need are reluctant to take part.

Names of sponsors and recipients are kept confidential.
