The Whistler Secondary Storm senior boy’s basketball team headed to Chilliwack this past weekend to compete in their first tournament, at G.W. Graham.
The team lost their first game to the host school, then were matched up against St. John’s of Vancouver. After a close battle the Whistler team fell behind by 20 points, but came storming back after a timeout to tie the game with just 10 seconds to go. Casey Svejkovsky drained five three-point shots in the rally. St. John’s made a layup in the closing seconds to take back the lead and the game. The entire crowd was cheering on the Storm during the comeback.
The final game was also a tough one, with the Storm losing to Pender Harbour.
The Storm’s next tournament is Jan. 11-12 in Hope.
The team is coached by longtime volunteer Chad Raill and newcomer Cory Heitz, and has set a goal of qualifying for the provincial “A” championships.
Nordic Twoonies start tonight
Cross Country Connection and Out on a Limb Landscaping are sponsoring the first Whistler Nordics Twoonie Race of the season tonight, Thursday, Dec. 20, with their second annual Natty or Nice Reggae Christmas icebreaker.
The race will be short, just 4.8 km for adults, and starts at the registration table at the Lost Lake ticket booth. The finish is at the Warming Hut after one or two laps of the lake. Registration gets underway at 5:30 p.m. and the race starts at 6:15 p.m.
To take part you need to be a member of the Whistler Nordics, have a valid ski pass for Lost Lake, and chip $2 into the pot. Memberships will be on sale at the start.
All participants will be given food and refreshments, as well as a chance to win draw prizes from Twoonie sponsors. Sponsors this year include Salomon, CarboPro, Adidas Eyewear, Clif Bar, Swix, and Barefoot Wines.
After the first race there will be a two week wait until the next Twoonie, on Jan. 3, after which point they will be every Thursday night until the end of February. More races may be added if the snowpack holds.
King of the Rail on Dec. 29
Jibbers of all ages are invited to the first King of the Rail rail jam of the season on Saturday, Dec. 29, taking place under the lights at the base of Blackcomb.
This is the fourth year for the rail series, which has become hugely popular among skiers and snowboarders. It’s not uncommon for a hundred or more athletes to take part, with crowds of up to 200 looking on.
To participate you need a valid Night Moves lift pass, a signed waiver if you’re still a minor, and the entry fee. The entry fee will be split between the winners in each category, which will be determined by the skiers and riders themselves in a vote. All participants are also eligible to win draw prizes.
Sign-on is at the Blackcomb Daylodge after 5 p.m., and the jam will run from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Helmets are mandatory, mouthguards and pads recommended, and no inverted tricks will be permitted.
