Sunny day brings out KVRS racers

Clear skies and cold temperatures — not to mention the quickly approaching Peak to Valley race — brought out the biggest field of the season for the Kokanee Valley Race Series. The Jan. 17 race was a super G, taking place on Ptarmigan on Whistler Mountain, and every competitor got one run on the 32-gate, 285 metre (935 foot) vertical course.

Last Thursday, Jan. 17, 79 racers signed on to race, including a record of 18 men in the 50 to 59 category. It’s also worthy to note that the 50 to 59 men’s winner Jamie Edwards posted the fastest time of the day outside of the pro category, finishing ahead of skiers up to 30 years younger.

The KVRS is taking a break for a few weeks while the events crew gets ready to host the annual Appleton Rum Peak to Valley Race on Feb. 1-2. Organizers are looking for volunteers to help out with that event, and are giving away extra lift tickets for volunteering two days, as well as tickets to a prize draw for a pair of skis, a snowboard, and other prizes from Atomic and DNA. There is also a volunteer appreciation event on Sunday, Feb. 3.

Shifts for the race are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Call Janet at 604-905-2039 for more information.

For skiers looking to tune up their skills before the Peak to Valley, there is a Masters Race on Sunday, Jan. 27.

Advance registration is available Whistler-Blackcomb Guest Relations for $20, and day of race registration is $25 at Raven’s Nest on Whistler Mountain until 9:45 a.m. Both racer and sport divisions are available.
