While the trial for a Whistler and Pemberton RCMP officer wrapped up last week, the court has not yet released its decision.
Inspector Norm McPhail, head of the Sea to Sky Regional Police Services, said the judge has reserved judgment over a two-week period before rendering a decision on the case.
Constable Devon Jones stood in the Kamloops provincial court from Jan. 21-24 for allegedly punching another off-duty officer unconscious during the 2006 Mountie Stomp Dance. He is being charged with one count of assault causing bodily harm.
An internal code of conduct investigation is being held as well.
According to a spokesprson for the RCMP “E” Division Constable Annie Linteau, when there is an opinion than an officer may have violated the RCMP act, his supervisor can order an internal code of conduct investigation.
“In this case, the code of conduct investigation parallels the criminal investigation. And that will be continued once the court proceedings are over,” said Linteau.
Linteau added that some of the measures that can stem from such investigations include imposing formal sanctions.
Jones served as the local RCMP spokesperson between 2004 and 2007. He maintains that he used force the night of the dance because the other officer had a dangerous grip on a friend’s throat.
