Peak to Valley this weekend

The annual Appleton Rum Peak To Valley Race takes place this Friday and Saturday, with teams of four tackling a course that runs from the top of The Saddle to Creekside.

The annual Appleton Rum Peak To Valley Race takes place this Friday and Saturday, with teams of four tackling a course that runs from the top of The Saddle to Creekside. The vertical drop is roughly 1,440 metres, with 180 gates from top to bottom of the 5 km course. It’s not uncommon for racers to scream during their last few turns as the lactic acid buildup becomes intolerable, or to collapse out of breath in the finish corral.

Despite the difficulty, the race sells out within a few days of tickets going on sale in June.

Each team of four must have one female racer, and the combined age of participants determine what divisions teams are placed in. There are also awards for the fastest overall males and females, and the fastest team.

There is a mandatory check-in for team captains tonight (Thursday, Jan. 31) from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Dusty’s Bar and Barbecue. This is the last opportunity for teams to make racer substitutions. Bib pickup is on Friday and Saturday (Feb. 1-2) from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. at Dusty’s.

If you’re on Whistler Mountain during the race, you’ll need to pass through certain gates. Please listen to events staff manning the gates to avoid colliding with skiers.

Volunteers sought for XC events

February is shaping up to be a busy month for local cross-county skiers, and organizers are looking for volunteers to help out with a series of events taking place at Lost Lake Park and Whistler Olympic Park.

The first event is the seventh annual Lost Lake Shuffle, hosted by Cross Country Connection on Sunday, Feb. 10. This is a three -hour enduro event, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., where participating solos and teams see how many laps they can make of a course around Lost Lake in the time limit.

On Feb. 16-17, the Spud Valley Nordics and Whistler Nordics will be hosting back-to-back Coast Cup races at Whistler Olympic Park. Saturday’s race, hosted by the Pemberton Spud Valley Nordics, is a team sprint event, running from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. On Sunday, the Whistler Nordics are hosting an individual classic race, same place and time.

The Whistler Nordics are also hosting the 30 th annual Whistler Loppet, open technique, on Sunday, Feb. 24 from 10 a.m. to noon at Nicklaus North.

Organizers are looking for volunteers to help with set-up, take-down, marshaling, timing, package pick-up, package stuffing, food and beverage, and other responsibilities.

If you can help out in one or more racers, contact Theresa Oswald at volunteer@whistlernordics.com, or 604-905-0214.
