Ledcor has secured the use of Crown land on Blackcomb Mountain
for its run of river energy project on Fitzsimmons Creek.
The provincial Integrated Land Management Bureau offered the
land tenure in February. It is just one of several hurdles that need to be
crossed before the green hydro project is up and running.
“It’s still working its way through (the process),” said Jamie
Horner, senior project manager with Ledcor.
The land tenure is a pre-requisite, he added, for the water
license and other permits.
The Fitzsimmons Creek independent power project (IPP) has been
long on the books but was stalled due to its proximity to the 2010 Olympic
sliding centre track.
That $105 million track is now complete.
Horner said the company has support from several key players,
including Whistler-Blackcomb.
“We’re getting a lot of support for it from a lot of different
areas,” he said.
Normally an IPP takes roughly 18 months to complete. The hope is that the Fitzsimmons IPP would be operational by 2010 to showcase green energy in Whistler.
