Squamish and Lil’wat Nations have submitted a formal rezoning application, complete with guiding principles, for three of the seven land parcels obtained through the Legacy Lands Agreement (LLA).
The application seeks to have 32 acres of Alpine North, located above the Rainbow Subdivision, and 10 acres of the former highways maintenance yard rezoned multi-family residential. All 458 bed units negotiated under the LLA will be spread across these two sites.
The application also includes a rezoning request for five acres at the entrance to Function Junction, where the two nations would like to construct a service station in advance of the 2010 Olympics.
The application will flow through standard municipal conduits, and will include consideration by staff and council, as well as the public.
The two nations have committed to guiding principles in developing the legacy lands that:
• Are based on sound environmental planning principles
• Add to the diversity of housing stock and commercial properties in the Resort Municipality of Whistler
• Deliver the 458 Bed Units included in the Agreement
• Are based on the goals of Whistler 2020
• Create a development strategy consistent with the cultural and historic values of the Squamish and Lil’wat First Nations
• Reflect the stewardship values of the lands and surrounding environment
• Reflect the traditional names of the Squamish and Lil’wat First Nations.
