The Association of Whistler Area Residents for the Environment will be handing out their third annual Whistler Environmental Business (WEB) awards on June 8, recognizing local companies that go above and beyond in reducing energy consumption, eliminating waste, or taking other steps to protect the environment.

There are three categories — large business, medium business and small business — and last year’s winners were Whistler-Blackcomb, Ziptrek Ecotours and Winning Team Solutions. The first award went to Whistler-Blackcomb in 2006 for their efforts to reduce power consumption by making buildings and systems more efficient.

The 2008 WEB awards will be presented at the second annual Energy Film Festival at Millennium Place on Sunday, June 8, which closes out the three-day Enviro-Fest festival.

All businesses are encouraged to enter the WEB awards, and must submit their completed applications by Friday, May 30. Applications can be e-mailed to aware@direct.ca, or dropped off at the Race and Company law firm in Whistler Marketplace.

Applications are available at the Whistler Chamber of Commerce, or online at www.awarewhistler.org.

To qualify, business have undertaken voluntary initiatives in the workplace to reduce their environmental impact or improve the natural environment, and should have internal or community-oriented programs to conserve natural resources or protect the environment that demonstrate the joint benefits to business and the environment (e.g. reducing energy use and reducing energy costs.)

Small businesses are generally nine employees or less, medium businesses are 10 to 99 employees, and large businesses have100-plus workers.

Businesses that are interested in booking tables at for the Enviro-Fest Fair on June 7 can book until Saturday, May 31. There are a limited number of spaces available at the fair, which includes interactive displays, activities, and live music.
