Whistler RCMP are gearing up for the Victoria Day Long Weekend (May 17 to 19) and promising that they will be out in force to ensure that people stay within the boundaries of the law.
An RCMP news release states that there will be a heightened police presence this weekend and that officers will be watching for instances of people, visitors or otherwise, breaking the law. That includes drinking and driving, speeding, drugs, under-aged drinking and other contraventions. Noisy parties and public drinking will not be tolerated, according to the statement.

Keeping roads safe
This week, May 13 to 19, marks Canada Road Safety week, a nationwide campaign to ensure that the country’s roads are the world’s safest. The week is an initiative by the police and has been “strategically chosen’ as it is the “first ‘summer’ long weekend,” according to an RCMP news release. On weekends like this, traffic collisions become more frequent.
“The deaths, sorrow and broken hearts that result from carelessness behind the wheel can be prevented,” said Cst. Nathan Roberts with the Whistler detachment in a news release.
There were 12 deaths on the roads and highways in the Pemberton area alone last year. Police are planning to focus on behaviours that put road users at risk. Those behaviours include careless driving, not wearing a seat belt, and all forms of aggressive driving.
“Police agencies across the country are collaborating on this project,” Cst. Roberts said in the release. “They know that the involvement of the driving public is essential to achieve safer streets and highways.”
