WORCA Dirt Camp registration open

Trail maintenance day planned for May 24

The Whistler Off Road Cycling Association (WORCA) opened up registration for eight one-week youth dirt camps today (May 15), with spots going on a first-come, first served basis. Registration is available online at www.worca.com.

There will be eight camps this year with room for 30 kids in each, with groups alternating between 6-9 years old and 10-13 years old — July 7-11 (ages 6-9), July 14-18 (ages 10-13), July 21-25 (ages 6-9), July 28-Aug.1 (ages 10-13), Aug. 4-8 (ages 6-9), Aug. 11-15 (ages 10-13), Aug. 18-22 (ages 6-9), and Aug. 25-29 (ages 10-13). Based on last year’s attendance all of the camps are expected to sell out.

The camps will feature one coach for every five or six riders, and are led by Canadian Cycling Association certified coaches. Cycling B.C. provided grants last year to bring an instructor to Whistler to train the coaches.

The cost of the camps is $150 for the week. A large portion of the costs are covered by funds raised annually through the WORCA bike swap, which raised roughly $12,000 this year.

As well as the Dirt Camps, WORCA trail director Jerome David is organizing WORCA’s annual trail cleanup day for May 24. The day’s activities will depend on the snowpack, and it’s possible that volunteers will be asked to help with a larger bridging or armoring project instead of the usual sweep. More details next week.
