The fourth race in the Phat Wednesday downhill series was a little different, as a field of 90 riders took part in a dual slalom on a the new Double Vision course in the Boneyard last week.

The format was simple — riders were timed individually racing on both the left and right courses, and their combined time determined their spot in the rankings. They also raced head to head in the different heats, but that was all for motivation as only the combined time mattered.

In the women’s category, Emily Johnston edged out Rebecca McQueen with a combined time of 1:59, three seconds ahead of McQueen. Johnston also posted the only time under a minute, with a time of 57.96 on her first run.

In third was Jen Ashton in 2:03, with Theresa McGreragle coming in a fraction of a section later.

In junior women, Jenny Lawson bested sister Sarah Lawson in both runs.

In junior male, Nick Geddes won by three sections over Andrew Doroty in 1:49, with Austin Benge placing third.

In the male category, Thomas Kyle’s 1:44 edged out Mason Mashon for the win by less than a second, while Harry Armstrong placed third out of 68 starters in 1:46.

As always the participants were treated to food and refreshments after the race at the GLC, and draw prizes from sponsors at Kokanee, Sram, WTB, RaceFace, Camelbak and others.

The fifth race was this week, Aug. 5, possibly on the Canadian Open downhill course that will be featured in Crankworx.
