Entering its third year, the Ken Quon Ride On and Re/Max Corridor Cup Team Challenge gets underway this Sunday with registration getting underway at 9:30 a.m. at the Riverside RV Resort and Campground.

There are three parts to the event — a family ride, a recreational ride, and the team challenge where teams of two make three laps of a course and are ranked by their combined time. Male, female and co-ed teams are welcome.

The event raises funds for the Ken Quon Memorial Fund, which to date has purchased three portable patient monitors for Whistler’s ambulance fleet. This year’s event will attempt to equip Pemberton’s ambulances with similar monitors, which can be used to monitor vital signs while transporting injured people out of the backcountry, and in the ambulance on the way to the hospital.

Entry forms are available online at www.kenquonrideon.com, or at the start/finish area. You must be a member of WORCA to race, although everyone is welcome to participate in the ride. The recreational ride is $15 for adults and $10 for juniors, while the Cup event is $20 per team member.

That includes a post-event barbecue, which will feature a silent auction and other activities. Boys and girls under the age of 12 that take part in the family ride are also eligible to win the draw prizes, one boy’s bike and one girl’s bike.

Last chance for Creekside skatepark

The Creekside Skatepark, located in the Franz’s Trail underground parking lot, is slated to close at the end of August. The Whistler Skateboard Association is looking for a new home for the bowl and ramps, but in the meantime the association is hosting a series of Friday night park sessions.

“Lenny (Rubenovitch) and I came up with the idea as a way to go out in style,” said Brian Hockenstein. “We plan on going from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Fridays, and it will be pretty informal — get people down there every week, maybe with music, just to skate for a couple of hours and have fun.”

The association will be looking for lots of volunteers at the end of the month to help remove the park features, which will be stored by Whistler-Blackcomb until a new home can be found. The features have a value of between $15,000 and $20,000.

Segger-Gigg takes on Bull of Africa

Less than a month after placing fourth in the 135-mile Badwater ultra marathon, Squamish’s Jen Segger-Gigg left for South Africa and a seven-day, 700 km adventure race. She will be racing with a South African team called Cyanosis.

You can follow her team’s progress online at www.bullofafrica.com, and Segger-Gigg will be posting her own reports as regularly as possible at www.challenge-by-choice.blogspot.com. The race gets underway Saturday, Aug. 9.

Time trial championships return to Squamish

Once again the B.C. Time Trial Provincial Championships will take place along the Squamish Valley Road, with road racers chasing each other down on a 38.5 km route following a staggered start.

The championships take place Saturday, Aug. 9, with a short course for junior racers and hand cycle athletes.

For the Record

In last week’s article on the upcoming Trialsworx trials competition, the author inadvertently referenced trials rider Scott Baia when it should have been Steve Baia. We regret the error.
