Test of Metal announces registration plans

Registering for the annual Test of Metal bike race in Squamish has become somewhat of an ordeal in recent years, as the popularity of the event soared and all 800 spots were snapped up in the first hour.

Registering for the annual Test of Metal bike race in Squamish has become somewhat of an ordeal in recent years, as the popularity of the event soared and all 800 spots were snapped up in the first hour. For some riders it’s almost easier to go pro and bypass the registration process than it is to take part in this race.

Last year the organizers hosted a locals only registration, got rid of the waitlist and instead oversold the race by 200 entries and did not replace the people who dropped out. It was so successful that they decided to keep it the same this year.

The locals only registration window, which includes 200 spaces, runs from 6 p.m. on Dec. 1 to midnight on Dec. 5 at www.testofmetal.com, on a first-come, first-served basis.

“This is one of the changes we made that worked really well,” said race director Cliff Miller. “We try to ensure that there is good local participation in the race each year, and this registration process certainly helped that.”

To qualify for the locals registration, you must provide proof of residency — B.C. Driver’s licence or identification card, and a second piece of identification — in person from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Connections in Squamish, closing at 4 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 12. The address is 37710 2 nd Avenue.

Locals who don’t make it in will have to take their chances in the general registration on Jan. 1, starting at 6 p.m.

The Test of Metal course is 67 km, with over 1,200 metres of climbing and 35 km of singletrack. The fastest riders come in just under two hours, but recreational riders take five to six hours if they make the two cutoffs.

As well, the Test of Metal is the second of three events in the Squamish Triple Crown, along with the second annual OreCrusher lap race in May and the 47 km GearJammer epic race in July.
