The Alpine Club of Canada has many responsibilities, from
providing training and certification to guides and participants, to advocating
for parks and the environment; from managing a network of 28 alpine huts, to
collecting data on routes, expeditions and other incursions into the
backcountry in a variety of books and journals.
But in many ways the Alpine Club is primarily a social
organization, a club where like-minded adventure seekers can meet, exchange information,
and organize trips, as well as coordinate local activities, like building new
huts.
The Whistler section of the Alpine Club is having a membership
drive with weekly day trips, training sessions and organized adventures,
primarily aimed at backcountry skiers. Some events planned include an overnight
excursion to the Wendy Thompson Hut, avalanche beacon practices, and all day
trips to some less traveled areas.
The club is hosting its first meeting of the 2009 winter season
on Thursday, Dec. 4 at 7 p.m., in the Whistler Chamber of Commerce meeting
room.
The meeting is free to attend, and memberships are $40, which
includes membership in the national organization, participation in local trips
and training opportunities.
