RCMP have still not released the name of the 47-year-old skier who died on Whistler Mountain Dec. 24.
The Whistler man was skiing in the Toilet Bowl area of the Upper Dave Murray Downhill run Wednesday afternoon. Whistler RCMP were advised of the accident at 2:51 p.m. They say the man left the skied portion of the run, hit some large rocks and was severely injured. Ski patrol and two mountain doctors attended and attempted to resuscitate the man but were unsuccessful.
The run was open but the area had been posted with signs warning of unmarked rocks and obstacles, due to early season conditions.
The death was the second on Whistler Mountain in three days. On Dec. 22 a 17-year-old snowboarder died after he struck a large boulder in a closed area. Samuel Daigle, a student at Vancouver’s Kitsilano secondary school, was snowboarding near the confluence of the Marmot and Lower Rat Fink runs, about a “three minute skiing time” from the top of the Emerald Chair. The area is normally within the ski area boundary, but due to snow conditions it was designated “beyond boundary” at the time.
