Fifty-five officers are coming from the Lower Mainland to bolster Whistler’s current unit and ensure Dec. 31 celebrations stay peaceful and fun.

“We are looking forward to another fun, alcohol-free First Night,” said Staff Sgt. Steve LeClair.

He added RCMP officers and bar owners will work together to deal with any issues that might arise from people getting too rowdy at nightclubs.

Road checks for drinking and driving will also be set up on Highway 99 throughout the holidays.

Last year’s First Night was relatively calm, with officers arresting 40 people.

Most arrests were for drinking in public and causing disturbances. Two people, though, were arrested for allegedly assaulting a police officer, and five people were handed 24-hour suspensions for driving under the influence.
