After months of planning and controversy, Squamish‘s curbside
recycling program took off last week.
During the months of November and December, residents were
given blue totes good for all recyclable materials, except for glass, which
will still have to be taken to the bottle depot on Queensway. To coincide with
the new program, depots in Valleycliffe, downtown and on Government Road have
been decommissioned. As of Jan. 31, those stations will no longer be open. Residents
with excess material can make drops at Carney’s Recycle Centre.
With the new pick-up comes a new system. Grey garbage totes
will be picked up bi-weekly, with blue recycling totes picked up on alternate
weeks. Carney‘s has promised to bear-proof all garbage totes by April, with a
small cost associated.
“We are very pleased to commence our long awaited curbside recycling program,” said Mayor Greg Gardner in a press release. “This program will allow us to increase the diversion of waste away from the Squamish Landfill in a manner that is both convenient and cost effective for our residents.”
