Former IKEA, Volvo CEO to discuss leadership in troubled times

While it’s not exactly true that the Chinese character for “crisis” is a combination of “danger” and “opportunity,” there is something to be said for silver linings and making lemonade — even in the worst global economic crisis in decades.

While it’s not exactly true that the Chinese character for “crisis” is a combination of “danger” and “opportunity,” there is something to be said for silver linings and making lemonade — even in the worst global economic crisis in decades.

On Jan. 16 the Whistler Centre for Sustainability and Whistler2020 Partners are hosting a special guest speaker, former IKEA and Volvo CEO Göran Carstedt, to give a special presentation on “Community Leadership in Troubled Economic Times.”

Carstedt is now the leader of the Society for Organizational Learning Global Network, and the senior director of C40 (large cities) Clinton Climate Initiative. His presentation will focus on “Strategic Positioning in Changing Marketplaces,” and “Leading and Learning Toward Success.”

He will be joined in a panel discussion by representatives from Tourism Whistler, Whistler Chamber of Commerce, Whistler Blackcomb, and the Resort Municipality of Whistler.

The introduction will be by Cheeying Ho, executive director of the Whistler Centre for Sustainability, and Pique Newsmagazine editor Bob Barnett. Sponsors include Rio Tinto Alcan and Ziptrek Ecotours.

The presentation takes place at the Telus Whistler Conference Centre, with refreshments and a cash bar from 6:30 p.m. and presentations from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Admission is free.
