Even though the medals ceremonies are now gone, construction on Celebration Plaza will continue as planned.
The Lot 1/9 Taskforce spent three-hours on Tuesday going over the plaza's blueprints and making sure the proposed development is still appropriate.
But the taskforce's chair, Drew Meredith, said the project was always developed for Whistler's use following the Olympic Games and no changes needed to be made.
"Nothing is going forward on this project that has anything to do with the medals," explained Meredith. "It is really about the legacy."
Council called for the meeting after the Vancouver Organizing Committee confirmed the medals ceremonies would be moved from the plaza to the sports venues.
Meredith explained the councillors had some misunderstanding about the plaza's design and the medals. That mix-up has now been clarified.
"There was some theory that there were elements in the project that were part of the medals ceremony, and therefore those elements could be removed. In fact, there weren't any elements in the project that are part of the medals ceremony," said Meredith.
Councillors Eckhard Zeidler, Tom Thomson, Ted Milner and Grant Lamont all attended this week's meeting.
Meanwhile, the municipality's Martin Pardoe spent seven hours on Friday meeting with the Whistler Arts Council, as well as other local producers, performers and marketing people to look at programming at Celebration Plaza.
Pardoe was not able to comment on the details of the meeting, but said the meeting was: "an information gathering session and an exploration of what kind of performances Whistler Celebration Plaza is suitable for."
The $13.6 million plaza is currently under construction on Lot 1/9, next to the Brewhouse, in Whistler Village.
