Backyard Slopestyle this weekend

Showcase Showdown takes over base of Whistler Mountain

In a good winter in Whistler you don't have to travel far to find a terrain park, as locals create their own off of decks and roofs, through backyards, and in driveways using snow and any flat objects they can find.

That's the kind of grass roots feel that the organizers of the 12th annual Showcase Showdown are going for this year.

The action takes place Saturday at the base of Whistler Mountain, with the women competing from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., and the men from 11 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., with the first two-run heat at noon, the second run at 2 p.m., and the top-16 final at 4:30 p.m. Each rider gets two runs and only the best run counts.

Prime viewing is available from the GLC patio, but locals are invited to bring their lawn chairs and come out and watch.

The cost to register is $50 plus GST, and the field is capped at 20 women and 60 men. Registration is at Showcase stores in the Sundial Hotel and Marketplace, and in Vancouver on West 4th Ave. Competitor check-in is on Friday at 5 p.m. at Showcase in the Sundial Hotel.

There is $5,000 in cash up for grabs, plus Nixon headphones and other prizes from Samsung.
