The Whistler Gymnastics Club headed to the Surrey Invitational last weekend, with athletes posting strong results in every category.

It was a busy meet, and organizers were forced to break up categories with more than 50 athletes.

In the Level 3 Open category, where Whistler fielded two girls for the first time in club history, Rebecca Flynn earned a bronze medal on floor, and placed fourth on bars, fifth on vault and sixth on beam, to place fifth all around. Nicola Halliwell was fourth on vault, seventh on beam and ninth on bars and floor to place ninth all around. Both athletes will be competing in the B.C. Championships in Langley in mid-April.

In the Level 2 Open group, Lenka Prochazka tied for first all around with a gold medal on bars, silver medals on floor and vault, and a ninth place finish on beam. Tyece Fairweather earned a bronze medal on the floor and was ninth all around. Jasmin Budge, Desirae Smith and Meg Halliwell were 13th, 14th and 15th all around.

The Level 2 Tyro category was split into age groups because of the large number of entries. In the 1997 group, Ali Marriott won a bronze medal on bars and placed 10th all around. In the 1998 group, Keeley Wentzel was 20th all around, Carly Mann got a bronze medal and placed 21st all around, and Cambria Willis and Jesse Budge were 22nd and 25th respectively.

In Level 2 Novice, Katrina Underhill finished 10th all around out of 25 competitors with an eighth place result on vault. Hannah Raffler won a bronze on the vault to place 11th all around, and Maye Akama was eighth on floor to place 15th all around.

Some of the club's younger athletes will be heading to a meet on Bowen Island this weekend. The next competition is the Zone 5 Championships and Interclub Invitational, taking place in Whistler March 28-29.
