Save Our Rivers coming to Whistler

There's a war going on over independent power, and the Save Our Rivers Society has been one of its loudest soldiers.

There's a war going on over independent power, and the Save Our Rivers Society has been one of its loudest soldiers.

It will bring its message to Whistler on Thursday as part of a provincial tour to ensure that independent power remains an issue right up to the May 12 provincial election.

Official spokesperson Rafe Mair, a longtime radio host and columnist with The Tyee, and Western Canada Wilderness Committee (WCWC) National Campaign Director Joe Foy will host the event at Spruce Grove Field House, hoping to drum up awareness of the issue of "private power" in time for the election.

SORS has been a key opponent of independent power, which commonly refers to run of river projects that use the flow of a river to generate power. The society helped organize an informational room at a Dec. 4 public meeting about the Ryan River project in Pemberton to raise awareness of its campaign.

It's also been on the front line of opposition to the projects, which they say amount to privatizing B.C. rivers in an unaccountable fashion. They can be found at almost any meeting regarding a private power project in B.C. and have been a big presence in the media and on the blogosphere, posting documentaries and hosting appearances in various locations.

The event in Whistler, hosted by AWARE and the WCWC, will include a video presentation. The SORS provincial tour will next head to Penticton and thereafter to Merritt, Kelowna and Salmon Arm.

Run of river promises to remain a big issue for some time to come. This is a good opportunity to hear a very vocal side of that issue.
