The Whistler for the Disabled Society (WFTD) has signed an agreement with whistler.com that will see agents for the latter get training to provide accurate information for visitors with disabilities.

Both whistler.com and WFTD will share a percentage of the revenues from bookings for accessible travel in a bid to enhance the visitor experience for disabled travelers.

"Providing accessibility to visitors and residents has been a commitment of our Resort since its inception," Arlene Schieven, vice-president of marketing for Tourism Whistler, said in a news release. "As a mountain destination focused on growing visitation, continually enhancing our accessibility is critical to our success."

In addition to the 2010 Olympic Games, Whistler will also play mountain host for the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games and host more than 90 per cent of Paralympic competitions from March 12 to 21 next year. Schieven feels the agreement with whistler.com is an opportunity for Whistler to enhance the quality of its accessible products and information.

"We believe this agreement is a significant step towards promoting and delivering Whistler's promise as an exciting and inclusive destination for travelers with disabilities," she said in the news release. "The 2010 Paralympic Winter Games represent an extraordinary opportunity to showcase our commitment to that."

The Whistler for the Disabled Society was created in 2001 by Whistler resident Hugh Tollett and has since committed itself to providing accessibility information for visitors and residents. The Society has provided information for travel agents, hotel staff, tourism attractions and information centres.
