Good deeds pay off for Whistler citizens

Although there are a lot of different definitions of what makes a good citizen, Whistler is all about its volunteers.

Although there are a lot of different definitions of what makes a good citizen, Whistler is all about its volunteers. From the Village Host program to civic groups like Rotary, to race marshals on the sidelines every week, locals contribute thousands of hours each year to the community.

The Community Foundation of Whistler recognizes its volunteers annually through the Citizen of the Year awards.

The 2009 award will be presented on Sunday, June 14 at a celebration at the Spruce Grove Field House. The event includes a barbecue, and runs from noon to 3 p.m.

In addition to Citizen of the Year, the foundation will also be presenting a cheque to the winner of the Kathy Barnett Memorial Scholarship, established to honour the Pique Newsmagazine founder and publisher, as well as Barnett's contributions to the foundation over the years.

Tickets are $30 for adults and $15 for children, and are available at Armchair Books and Pique Newsmagazine
