Whistler Athletes’ Village lauded at FCM

The Cheakamus Crossing neighbourhood brought Whistler accolades at the Federation of Canadian Municipalities conference this past weekend.

The Federation awarded the Resort Municipality of Whistler with a 2009 FCM-CH2M Hill Sustainable Community Award in the residential development category for the neighbourhood, which will double as residences for athletes during the 2010 Games.

"This important project is contributing creative and practical solutions to some of the critical issues of the environment and sustainable development the world faces today," said Federation President Jean Perreault in a news release.

The neighbourhood will house athletes in a pedestrian-oriented community that the municipality hopes will provide "easy access to neighbourhood conveniences" and indoor and outdoor recreation opportunities. It's been built to LEED standards and will also have commercial services, two hostels and a centre for high-performance development, according to the news release.

"Hosting the 2010 Winter Games has given Whistler the opportunity to surpass the community's goal to house at least 75 per cent of our workfoce," Whistler Mayor Ken Melamed said in a prepared statement.

"Initially the Athlete's Village was planned as a temporary village - instead, the development of a legacy resident neighbourhood is providing a means to meet housing needs and demonstrates our commitment to our journey towards sustainability."
