Whistler Community Services Society received a financial boost this week from the Royal Bank of Canada Foundation.

On Tuesday, Aug. 25, WCSS announced it had received $5,000 from RBC Foundation for their Youth Outreach and Peer Educator Program.

"The Royal Bank in Whistler proves again and again that they are a great community partner," said Lorna Van Staaten, administrator of the community services society. "This grant just furthers the extent of the great support they offer to youth in our community!"

The Youth Outreach Program is one of the society's core social programs and provides free, confidential outreach contact for people aged 13 to 39 years who are experiencing challenges with hunger, housing, drug and alcohol misuse, employment, eating disorders, relationship violence, roommate conflict, mental health and homesickness. This year alone, 171 people were referred to different community resources through the Youth Outreach Program.

The society's Peer Educator Program also aims to reach out to young people by training approximately 11 people a year to provide resource information to their peers in need. This year, the program also trained 19 Whistler Secondary School volunteers to provide peer support.
