The ongoing saga between the Mount Currie Band and a former candidate for chief will move from the court of public opinion to an actual court in June of 2010.

The Mount Currie Band of the Lil'wat Nation is suing former chief negotiator Lyle Leo, alleging that he took over half a million dollars in kickbacks while pushing a residential and commercial development in the Soo Valley.

Mount Currie Band lawyer Gregory McDade confirmed in a brief interview that a court date has been set for June of 2010 and that the parties are currently in the examination for discovery phase. At this phase, the parties to a lawsuit can examine people orally prior to trial, as well as evaluate the evidence before them.

The Mount Currie Band filed the lawsuit Feb. 4, 2009, days after the writ was dropped for the most recent election. That election saw incumbent Chief Leonard Andrew elected with twice the votes of Leo, his closest challenger.
