The final stage of security preparations for the 2010 Games begins this week as Public Safety Canada carries out Exercise Gold from Nov. 2 to 6.
This is the third of three security preparedness operations that began with Exercise Bronze last fall and Exercise Silver last winter. Exercise Bronze was called one of the biggest tabletop exercises the RCMP has ever held in Canada. Exercise Silver took place last February and Whistler residents may remember it for the helicopters flitting through the skies.
David Charbonneau, a spokesman with Public Safety Canada, said Exercise Gold will not have such activities and that it's run by the Office of the Coordinator for the 2010 Olympics and G8 Security.
The exercise is designed to confirm that federal, provincial, regional and municipal organizations are ready and able to respond to any emergencies during the 2010 Games in a coordinated manner.
"Exercise Gold will confirm information-sharing and coordination between federal, regional, municipal and private sector organizations and will be largely out of the public eye," Charbonneau said in an e-mailed statement. "The communities of Whistler, Squamish and Pemberton will not see personnel or equipment in their communities."
