At 2:15 a.m. on Dec. 9 a local fast food restaurant contacted the RCMP to inform them that someone had stolen their Point of Sale (POS) machine the previous evening.

The RCMP attended and discovered a machine that had been stolen from another business and that had likely been altered to skim debit card numbers and codes from unsuspecting shoppers and diners.

The RCMP reviewed security footage that showed two men and a woman in the premises. The female, from out of province, was recognized in connection with other debit card frauds in B.C.

Business owners are reminded to take steps to never leave POS machines unattended and to pay attention to their equipment so they can spot any attempts at fraud. As well, consumers are warned to check their bank statements regularly and to be on the lookout for any suspicious transactions.

Road check catches illegal immigrant

A random road check in Pemberton resulted in the arrest of a U.K. citizen who was wanted on an immigration warrant. According to the RCMP the officer at the road check recognized the male from a past run-in with the police, as well as his dog - a large Great Dane.

When the officer went to arrest the suspect the male resisted, resulting in a struggle. Pepper spray was eventually used to subdue the suspect, who was transferred to a holding cell in Whistler and then transferred to a Vancouver jail to await processing. The man was given a deportation order, but remained in the country.
