A clear night overnight on Saturday set the stage for a fast Whistler Blackcomb Ski and Snowboard Cross competition on Sunday, with 140 skiers and snowboarders of all ages taking part.
Like the previous event the biggest turnout was in the youth skiing categories, although it was down slightly compared to the first of the two events due to local racers taking part in the B.C. Championships over the weekend.
Still, the turnout was almost the same as for the first event with a higher turnout in the adult ski and snowboard categories and more girls in the mix on both skis and snowboards. Given Canada's results in the ski and snowboard cross events at the 2010 Olympics - gold medals by Maëlle Ricker in snowboardcross and Ashleigh McIvor in ski cross - it's a good bet that a few athletes were feeling inspired.
In Ski Girls 10 and Under Brooklyn Higgs overcame a second-place finish in the semi-finals to edge Martina Gershon for the win. Sophia Quinn was third and Mollie Jespen fourth. Alissa Wong won the small final to place fifth.
Benjamin McMaster's toughest race was the quarterfinal, but he went on to win the Ski Boys 10 and Under race. Alexander Valentin was second, Luke Smart third and Davis Hogg fourth. Edward Coleman won the small final to place fifth.
Cassidy Deane won every round on her way to first in the Ski Girls 11 to 13 race, followed by Chantal Deane, Cameryn Higgs and Carlene Loughlin. Carlin Mann won the small final.
JC Heckman went undefeated to win the Ski Boys 11 to 13 race. He was followed by Lucas Stuyt, Will Heckman and Sean Rundle. Edi Noah Schreyer won the small final.
Blake Newton topped the Ski Boys 14 to 16 race, followed by Jack Iles, Zander Geddes and Christopher O'Neil. Jamie Kirker was fifth.
Marielle Thompson won Ski Girls 17 and Over, followed by Danielle Willhoeft, Sarah Lepine and Jessica Smith. Morgan Taylor was fifth.
Rob Lepine won all four rounds of races to win Sky Boys 17 and Over. He was followed by Frazer McGaw, Sven Winter and Nick Geddes. Patrick Gibson was fifth.
There were just three girls in Snowboard Girls 13 and Under. Georgia Astle won all three rounds to place first, followed by Kaila Lafreniere and Jennifer Lafreniere.
Leif Kulisek was first in Snowboard Boys 13 and Under, followed by Jonathon Williams, Devon Watt and Jason Lewis.
David Joncas was first in Snowboard Boys 14 to 16, followed by Sawyer Plato, Dominick Harry and Tra Schalm. Dyllan Slotte was fifth.
Megan Herbert won Snowboard Female 17 and Over, trailed by Luise Weber-Steinhinhaus, Courtney Araipu and Kristin Hart. Stephanie Johnston was fifth.
Derek Wintermans won the Snowboard Male 17 and Over competition, followed by Shane Roy, Jaime May and Jeff Drummond. Wade McCracken won the small final.
