An 85-year-old Whistler man is in critical condition after a car accident in West Vancouver Friday.
Const. Jeff Palmer said the man's name is not being released at the request of the family.
"Obviously, it's really quite a tragic circumstance," said Palmer.
The accident happened shortly after 4:30 p.m. on Friday, March 26. Investigators say the car, driven by the man's 76-year-old wife, drifted onto the shoulder and struck a concrete roadside barrier. The force of the impact sent the car roughly 15 metres off the road where it rolled several times before resting in the ditch.
The husband and wife were both taken to hospital, where the wife was treated and released that evening.
Police have ruled out alcohol as a possible cause and speed is not considered a factor in the accident, based on calculations made at the scene.
"The investigation at this point is examining driver fatigue as a possible cause and we'll continue to investigate to determine whether there's any other contributing factor or what other contributing factors can be ruled out," said Palmer.
The police will also be doing a mechanical inspection of the vehicle to rule out any other possible causes.
The accident happened on the westbound side of the highway near the Westmount overpass, just past the Cypress Bowl Road exit.
The westbound traffic lanes were closed for three hours on Friday afternoon while police were investigating.
