Backcountry Avalanche Advisory

As of Wednesday, April 7

Alpine: High Thursday, Considerable Friday

Treeline: Considerable Thursday, Moderate Friday

Below Treeline: Considerable Thursday, Moderate Friday

Travel Advisory: 14 cm of cold, loose snow sits over variable alpine surfaces. Exposed terrain has been scoured by the strong winds with windslab collecting in lee areas. Be aware of solar warming through the day even on non-solar aspects. The forecast weather is showing heavy precipitation, strong winds and rising freezing levels for the next 24 hours.

Avalanche Activity: Size 1 loose, point releases were running with ski cutting early in the day yesterday.

Snowpack: 10-20 cm of wind-affected snow is sitting over a settling upper snowpack. There are isolated pockets on solar aspects in the alpine that now have a 5 cm melt-freeze crust. At treeline the snow is more evenly distributed and has more sun effect on solar aspects.

Weather: A pacific frontal system will affect the south coast for the next 24 hours bringing heavy snowfall, strong winds and rising freezing levels. By mid morning Thursday this system will have moved on leaving us with cold, unsettled conditions.

Travel with a partner and be equipped and prepared for self-rescue. Watch out for winch-cats or snowmobile traffic if you re-enter the area after operating hours.
