Whistler skiers win 24 medals at B.C. Freestyle Championships

Freestyle clubs from across B.C. converged on Mt. Washington two weeks ago for the B.C. Freestyle Championships and Super Youth Challenge, with 180 skiers taking part in moguls, dual moguls, slopestyle and big air.

Some 20 of those athletes were members of the Whistler Blackcomb Freestyle Ski Club, which combined for 24 medals at the provincials, plus an additional five medals from the Super Youth Challenge for skiers 11 and under as of Jan. 1.

In the Super Youth moguls, Seth McGregor placed third among nine year olds and Sofiane Gagnon and McKenzie Wilson were second and third among 10 year olds.

McGregor then placed fourth in the slopestyle, while Gagnon and Wilson placed first and second in their category.

In the B.C. Championship moguls competition silver medal winners included Nicola Halliwell, Yuki Tsubota and Mitchell Wilson, while Sophie McGregor, Jake McGregor and Brenden Kelly earned bronze medals.

Brenden Kelly, Yuki Tsubota and Jae Woo Choi placed first in the dual moguls in their respective categories. Nicola Halliwell earned another silver medal and Sophie McGregor another bronze.

In slopestyle Taylor Wilson and Yuki Tsubota picked up gold medals for the club, with bronze medals going to Nicola Halliwell and Mitchell Wilson.

In the big air gold medals went to Yuki Tsubota, Mackenzie Wilson, Mitchell Wilson and Brenden Kelly. Winning silver were Nicola Halliwell and Sofiane Gagnon, while Taylor Wilson picked up a bronze medal.

The Mt. Washington event wrapped up the B.C. Freestyle Ski Association season, although the team continues to train and many will take part in events like the Park Rider Sessions slopestyle on April 18.
