Beach volleyball back for the summer

The Whistler Outdoor Volleyball Association (WOVA) has been growing in leaps and bounds over the past four years with a lot of hard work from league organizer Scott Rogers.

The Whistler Outdoor Volleyball Association (WOVA) has been growing in leaps and bounds over the past four years with a lot of hard work from league organizer Scott Rogers. It finally maxed out last season with four league nights and well over 200 members.

The number of teams has expanded slightly for 2010 and organizers are planning at least two tournaments over the summer to feed the appetite for volleyball.

Registration for teams will take place on June 1 this year at a location and time to be announced. There will be four divisions: 'A' division (teams of two, advanced and expert players) plays Monday evenings; 'B' division (teams of three, advanced players) plays on Thursday evenings; and 'C' division (teams of four, recreational players) are divided into two leagues and play on Tuesday and Friday evenings. All play gets underway at 6 p.m. on a mix of sand and grass courts at Rainbow Park.

There is also the possibility that WOVA will add a fifth recreational league on Tuesday afternoons if there is demand.

The first of two tournaments will take place on July 17 and 18 (men's tournament Saturday, women's tournament on Sunday). A second tournament will take place in August, with proceeds going towards the Whistler Community Services Society.

Also new this year, WOVA is offering a kids camp for the week of July 26 to 30 on grass courts at Meadow Park. The camp will be divided into two groups, with kids aged 11 to 13 playing from 9 a.m. until noon, and kids 14 and 15 playing from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. If it is successful then a second camp will be held in August.

WOVA is looking for sponsors through the summer, and to assist with the two tournaments. If you would like to support the league contact Scott Rogers at scott@wova.ca.

More information on the league is posted online at www.wova.ca.
