Sea to Sky riders dominate at Canada Cup

B.C.

B.C.'s provincial downhill mountain bike team headed to Mont Tremblant last weekend to take part in the first Canada Cup race of the season - and all but owned the podium with eight out of the top-12 spots in Junior Men, second place in women's elite, and two gold medals for the junior women and Under 17 women.

Three of the top cross-country elite men were from B.C. as well.

Whistler's Nick Geddes placed second to Victoria's Kyle Marshall in the Junior Men's downhill, while Tyler Allison was one spot back in third to give the B.C. team a sweep. Whistler's Max Horner placed sixth.

Other B.C. Team members in the top 12 include Remi Gauvin in fourth place, Chayse Marhsall 10 th , Riley Suhan 11 th and Justin Dale and Cam Porteous in a tie for 12 th .

Lauren Rosser of Team Squamish won the Junior Women's category with a time that would have placed her second in the elite competition. No matter, because Whistler's Rebecca McQueen was second in the elite race.

In Under 17 Women, Holly Feniak placed first overall while posting the fastest time of the day for all the racers, including the elite category.

Whistler's Tyler Morland placed second in Elite men, between Steve Smith of Nanaimo and Dean Tennant of Victoria.

Whistler's Chad Hendren joined the B.C. Team this year as a coach, and was impressed with the young riders with the provincial team.

"This was my first Canada Cup with Cycling B.C., so I learned a good deal myself about the way things work," he said. "It was a great experience for me and, I hope, the kids. They really paid attention and that paid off for them."

Head coach and Cycling B.C. high performance director Richard Wooles was also excited.

"The race is important," he said. "It has given some of our young riders valuable UCI points to help them towards their goal of riding in World Cups. In addition to which, it is a selection race for the national team for the World Championships to be held in Mont Ste. Anne later in the year, so these successes are significant."
