The Green River Motocross Park went back to the drawing board this year, adding more dirt and new machines to create a track the club says is now worthy to host provincial or national championships. In fact, the track is so good that national-level athletes spent the past few weeks at the track training for the upcoming Monster Energy Canadian National Tour stops in Kamloops, Calgary and Edmonton.
This weekend, June 12 to13, the track is also hosting back-to-back Canadian Motosport Racing Corporation-sanctioned races, numbers seven and eight of the CMRC's Kawasaki Canada Spring Series. As well, the Sunday event is one of two race qualifiers for the western amateur championships in Alberta.
Registration gets underway for riders at 7 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday, followed by the riders meeting and practicing at 8:30 a.m. The first motos should get underway soon after 9 a.m. and continue through the day.
The track is located between Whistler and Pemberton on the south side of Suicide Hill. Parking is free and admission is $5 for adults, $2 for children or $10 per carload of spectators. There is a concession on the site to purchase food and refreshments.
All levels and ages of riders will take part in the races, with more experienced racers taking on more laps of the new track, which was augmented with 200 loads of new dirt and set by machinery donated from Whistler Excavations and Snow Mountain projects.
One of the pros using the new track is team manager Todd Schumlick from the PerformX Motocross Race Team.
"We're very fortunate to have a track of this calibre right at our doorstep," he said in a release from the Green River Riding Club (GRRC). "This is my seventh year of preparing my athletes for the nationals around the Pemberton/Whistler area, and this year is a big step forward with track quality."
