Whistler Sliding Centre open for public tours

The Whistler Sliding Centre is once again open to the public after its spring hiatus.

The Whistler Sliding Centre is once again open to the public after its spring hiatus.

On June 25 the sliding centre, which is run by Whistler 2010 Sport Legacies, began offering tours at various prices for people interested in seeing the venue where Canadians won gold at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

General admission prices to the Whistler Sliding Centre are $7 for adults, $5.50 for seniors and $20 for families of two adults and children. Children aged nine or under get in free.

General admission gets you a tour of various exhibits with information about bobsleigh, luge and skeleton, track statistics, venue construction, ice making and Olympic sliding highlights.

There will be interactive displays, allowing visitors to sit in sleds and imagine what it's like to be a slider, with video footage of sliding competitions on the track.

Access to the Olympic stadium area is also available, which allows visitors to see the track up close. Visitors can navigate a self-guided walking tour with views of the lower portion of the track, where most of the action took place. That includes the finish dock where Olympic medalists celebrated.

Guided walking tours cost $15 for adults, $12 for seniors and $40 for families with two adults and children. Again, children aged nine or under get in free. For that you get Track Hosts telling you facts about sliding sports and the facility. The guided tour includes a visit to the Olympic stadium area to learn about ice making, track cooling and Olympic history.

A Behind the Scenes Tour costs $69 for adults, $59 for seniors and $59 for children aged nine or under. Reservations are required; call 604-964-0040 or e-mail tours@wsl2010.com.

A shuttle bus will meet Behind the Scenes Tour guests at the Gondola Transit Exchange. Guests learn about the fastest track in the world as they're driven up a private road to the top start house for the track.
