Pemberton receives funding for salmon conservation

Pemberton-area MP Chuck Strahl announced more than $1.

Pemberton-area MP Chuck Strahl announced more than $1.2 million in federal funding for the Pacific Salmon Foundation last week, including funds for Stewardship Pemberton Society to construct an interpretive centre for public education on salmon conservation.

Funding will also support a Pemberton hatchery with the capacity to produce 200,000 Coho salmon annually.

The $1.2 million will be divided among salmon enhancement projects in Langley, Coquitlam, Maple Ridge and Sooke.

"I'm very pleased to announce our government's support for the Pacific Salmon Foundation," said Strahl, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities. "Investments such as this are creating and protecting jobs, supporting Canadians who have lost their jobs, helping threatened industries, and laying the foundations for our future prosperity."

Strahl announced the funding on Friday, Aug. 27 at One Mile Lake in Pemberton.

Federal funding for the Pacific Salmon Foundation comes through the Community Adjustment Fund as part of the Conservative government's Economic Action Plan.

The Community Adjustment Fund will provide $306 million over two years to support the most-affected western Canadian communities, including those that are heavily reliant on resource-based industries such as forestry, mining, agriculture and fisheries, as well as communities that depend on the manufacturing industry. Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD) is delivering the fund in the four western provinces.
