While it's been busy in Whistler with non-stop events through the month of September, several locals stepped out to other events in the Lower Mainland.

In the annual BMO Grouse Grind Run on Sept. 19 - up a 2.9 km trail with 850 metres of vertical gain - Whister's Joren and Morgan Titus were fourth and sixth, with times of 28:42 and 29:33 respectively.

WORCA AGM tonight

The Whistler Off Road Cycling Association is hosting its annual general meeting tonight (Thursday, Sept. 30) at Legends in Creekside. The event gets underway at 6:30 p.m. with reports from directors, followed by the election of a board for the 2011-2012 season. All positions are open.

There will be some food and refreshments, as well as a chance to socialize, ask questions and make suggestions for next season.

The only remaining event on the WORCA calendar is the annual Halloween Toonie Ride, which will take place on Oct. 28. More details will be posted as they become available at www.worca.com.

Last week for bike park

The Whistler Mountain Bike Park is nearing the end of its season, with the lifts closing down on Thanksgiving Monday, Oct. 11. The park is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily via the Whistler Mountain gondola, and the Garbanzo Zone on weekends only.

Squamish BMX club heads to provincials

The Squamish BMX Club hosted the Triple Point Championship Finals last weekend, which attracted over 200 riders on each of the three days of competition including 240 riders on the final day.

It was a challenge to keep the track dry and in good shape with all the rain recently, but with some work on the course in the weeks before the contest it held up pretty well on days when there were almost 50 heats.

Locals held their own chasing provincial titles.

In Cruiser Age 36 to 40, Rich Carlson placed third.

In Cruiser Age 41 to 45, Steve Sherlock, Peter Schenk and Ron Goldstone were third through fifth respectively.

For Girls Age 7, Robyn Schenk placed first, with Teigen Pascual fourth.

For Girls Age 8, Chloe Carlson was second and Bailey Goldstone third.

For Girls Age 9, Maja Woolley was first.

In Girl Cruiser age 41 and Over, Miriam Bailey was first.

In Boys Age 5, Brady Reed was third.

In Boys Age 6, Jackson Goldstone was first.

In Boys Age 7, Samuel Watson was third, Jordan Tulk fifth and Lukas McLaughlin (Whistler) seventh.

In Boys Age 8, Seth Sherlock was seventh.

In Boys Age 9, Tristan Lindsay was third and Zak Berrisford sixth.

In Boys Age 10, Jacob Murray was second.

In Boys Age 11, Kasper Woolley was second and Sam Berrisford fourth.

In Boys Age 12, Brandon Murray was second.

In Men Age 19 to 27, Michael Bailey was second.

The club will continue into October with clinics, gate practice and a single point race. Several members will be heading to Chilliwack for the Thanksgiving weekend to race in the Canadian National Series event.

Locals come up big in motocross

The Green River Motocross Park held rounds 10 and 11 of the Canadian Kawasaki Motors CMRC fall series last weekend, which went off without a hitch despite the heavy rain.

It was a double-header on both days, with each rider racing twice to determine their overall standings for the day.

On Saturday:

Dawson Amann was first in the 65 cc category.

Zebediah Fellows was sixth in the Junior MX2, fourth in Junior MX3 and third in the youth category.

Jules Seaman was third in Junior MX3 and Junior MX2.

Wyan Fellows was second in 85 cc, and seventh in Supermini.

Shaun Greenaway was second in Vet Master, and first in Plus-40.

Gareth Palmer was second in Plus-25.

Nick Antle was 15th in Junior MX2 and 14th in Junior MX3.

On Sunday:

Dawson Amann was first in 65 cc.

Zebediah Fellows was first in Junior MX2 and third in Junior MX3.

Wyatt Fellows was second in 85cc and seventh in Supermini.

There were fewer local racers on Sunday as riders joined the crew in keeping the course drained for the visiting racers.

The 12th and last race of the fall series is this weekend in Kamloops and three local riders - Dawson Amann, Zebediah Fellows and Wyatt Fellows - will be representing the Green River track.

G.K. Ripper says goodbye

The 10th and final edition of the G.K. Ripper is on Saturday, Oct. 9, with organizers reviving the original Squamish bike race after a five-year absence and hosting a golf touranment.

The Ripper started out as a fundraiser for a local mountain biker who was paralyzed in a riding accident on the North Shore. Since then it has raised over $95,000, which has been quietly distributed to locals who are injured or in need.

In its final year, the G.K. Ripper will feature an up and down team bike race, based at Quest University. One team member will race up the Garibaldi Park Road - a 12 km dirt road with 1,000 metres of elevation gain - and tag their teammate, who will then ride back down on a selection of downhill trails - the 19th Hole, P'Nuts and Pseudo Tsuga. Expert downhill skills are required. The event is limited to 50 teams.

Registration is available at the Tantalus Bike Shop (you can call 604-898-2588 to book a spot) and costs $30 per person, plus $10 for a one day bike licence if you're not a member of SORCA. There will also be on-site registration from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., with the start at 1 p.m.

The golf tournament is $70 per person with a team of four.

Wolfpack looks to break slide in October

The month of September wasn't kind to the Squamish Wolfpack Junior B hockey team, with a record of one win and five losses.

The team has been outscored 28 to 15 in six games, with their only win against the Mission Ice Breakers on Sept. 19.

The team lost almost all of its players to college recruiters, trades and Junior A teams at the end of last season and has been rebuilding with a core of rookies and players passed on by other teams at the Junior A and Junior B level.

The good news is that the Wolfpack have been getting their chances this year and are matching up to their opponents when it comes to shots on net. Their power play is struggling, however, going one for 11 in their rematch against Mission last week, a game that ended in a 5-3 loss.

Squamish is hosting the Aldergrove Kodiaks Saturday, Oct. 2 at Brennan Park Arena. They play Ridge Meadows on Oct. 8 and then host Abbotsford on Oct. 9.

The Wolfpack will be hosting two games in Whistler this month, a home game against Port Moody on Monday, Oct. 11, followed by Grandview on Friday, Oct. 22.

Tickets to those games are $8 for adults and $5 for kids and seniors.
