The AWARE Kids Nature Club is looking for people with scary pets.
Halloween is coming up, which makes everyone think of all the creepy, scary things in life. For this reason the AWARE Kids Nature Club is trying to round up all the more adventurous pets in Whistler so that children can share in the delight of snakes, lizards, spiders, mice and other creatures that might fall into the category of creepy.
The AWARE Kids Nature Club happens the last Saturday of every month at the Whistler Public Library from 10 to 11:30 a.m., making the next one on Oct. 30. If the AWARE Kids Nature Club gets a few pet owners willing to share their enthusiasm with others, the day before Halloween could see kids exploring the world of creatures that might make others want to run away.
The Coordinator of the AWARE Kids Nature Club, Sara Jennings, was looking for a good idea that would mesh well with the concept of Halloween and the idea of "creepy crawlies" kept coming back to her, and what better way to learn about and enjoy these creatures than to experience them up close and learn from the people who love them. Jennings professes a love of snakes herself and has a fascination with spiders despite her urge to jump back when they come too close without her knowledge.
"I love to let a spider crawl on my hand, or watch it build a web and catch its food, but if that same spider lands on my arm unexpectedly I will freak out."
Jennings hopes a lot of local creepy-pet owners come forward and want to share their love with children, because she says, "all the things we consider creepy really are fascinating creatures and we often don't get the chance to experience them up close for prolonged periods and learn about how they might live in the wild."
