Coast Cup draws a crowd

Over 120 skiers turned out for the second Coast Cup cross-country race of the season, a sprint event hosted by the Whistler Nordics at Whistler Olympic Park on Saturday, Jan. 8.

Over 120 skiers turned out for the second Coast Cup cross-country race of the season, a sprint event hosted by the Whistler Nordics at Whistler Olympic Park on Saturday, Jan. 8.

Distances ranged from 150-metres for the youngest Atom racers to a kilometre for the open adult categories. All of the competitors got a qualification lap then up to three races, depending on how many racers were registered in each category. In larger groups, only the top two in each bracket of four skiers would advance to the next round.

In Atom Boys, Stephen Cousar was the fastest lopper at the end of the day, followed by Matthias Shorter and Skylar Beauregard.

In Atom Girls it was Linneau Uunila on top, trailed by Elle Johnston and Lily MacConnachie.

In PeeWee 1-2 Boys, Michael Murdoch was out front by a long way, followed by Sam Johnston and Ian Davidson, who were separated by less than half a second at the finish line.

In PeeWee 3-4 Boys, Cam Fitzmaurice was the fastest skier, trailed by Erik Heilg and Matan Guttmann.

In Peewee 1-2 Girls, Maxine Forder was first, followed by Jenna Sim and Benita Peiffer.

In Pee Wee 3 Girls, Ruby Meihuizen was the fastest, followed by Anna Goodwin and Stephany Derynck.

Austin Reith won for Midget Boys, followed by Jack Iles and Braden Metza.

Annika Richardson topped Midget Girls, trailed by Dot Forder and Gabrielle Smith.

In Juvenile Boys, Zayne Heyes was first, followed by Sam Morris and Quinn Wildi.

Marissa Woods and Katie Weeaver tied in Juvenile Girls, with Jenya Nordin placing third.

Lucas Putnam-Rea won the Junior Boys, followed by Fred Weaver and Adam Woods.

Nicki Murdoch won the Junior Girls race, followed by Maya Guttmann and Marlin Beswetherick.

Eric Carter ruled the Open Men category, finishing 16 seconds ahead of Mike Fitzmaurice for the win. Greg Goodwin was third.

Jessica Heyes and Jennifer Tabbernor battled it out in Open Women, with Heyes taking the win by three seconds. Joan Deroche was third.

Another Coast Cup scheduled for the following day was cancelled. Complete results at www.zone4.ca.
