Telus Winter Classic raises record $240,000

Money will go to Whistler Blackcomb Foundation

This year's Telus Winter Classic raised over $240,000 for the Whistler Blackcomb Foundation, a new record for the two-day event that generates money for local charities and non-profits.

"The support we receive from both our corporate and community supporters continues to be phenomenal," said Mei McCurdy, executive director of the Whistler Blackcomb Foundation. "I would especially like to thank all of our volunteers and the Whistler Blackcomb mountain staff who continue to go above and beyond to make this event possible."

Last weekend's event benefited from $60,000 donated by EcOasis, David Evans and Louis Gave.

Most of the events were sold out including the Friday night Winetastic event at the Whistler Resort and Spa, with four restaurants - Araxi, Ric's Grill, Milestones and the Aubergine Grill donating the food and Ali Milner providing the entertainment.

Also sold out was the Cisco Masquerade Gala event at the Whistler Roundhouse, which featured a silent auction, live auction by Steve Podborski and all kinds of live entertainment following the masquerade theme.

Another event was the Thornhill Real Estate Group Match Your Time Race Classic, where skiers took two runs down a giant slalom course - the first run to gauge their speed and the second run with participants guessing what their time would be.

The fastest team was the Granville West Group, with Jordan Kenna, Dave Burch, Mike O'Callaghan and Joe Hertz.

The team that came closest to guessing their times was Telus 1 - Bruce Gillanders, Robert Croston, David Bibby and Chris Catliff.

Cathy Milne was the fastest female and Joe Hertz the fastest male.

Sea to Sky non-profits are invited to apply for funding from the Whistler Blackcomb Foundation, with the deadline for the next round of grants April 1, 2011. You can get an application online at www.whistlerblackcomb.com/wbfoundation/funding/
