Whistler skiers top Canada Games super combined

Whistler's Broderick Thompson wins national title

Whistler's Broderick Thompson made the B.C. Ski Team at the start of the season at just 16 years old, and by January he already had a couple of FIS wins to his credit in slalom.

At the Canada Games in Nova Scotia, pitted against the top provincial team skiers from across Canada, he managed a first place finish to win a national title.

"I was upset with my super G run, I made a mistake that cost me so I knew I had to go for it in slalom," he said. "I'm excited to be a Canada Games champion, it means a lot to me."

Gabriel Presseault and Tomas Syrovatka of the Quebec team were second and third.

Martin Grasic and Brodie Seger were 13th and 15th for the B.C. team.

In the opening giant slalom, Brodie Seger was the top B.C. athlete in sixth place, with Peter Behncke in ninth and Thompson placing 11th.

Kailee Darlington, another Whistler Mountain Ski Club alum with the B.C. team, finished third in the women's giant slalom behind Mary Hemphill and Devon Clarke of Ontario. The WMSC's Emma King was ninth in that race.

In the women's super combined, Darlington led the team in fifth, with Becca Bermel in eighth.

The final event was the slalom. Brodie Seger was the top B.C. skier in 10th. WMSC alum Blake Ramsden was 14th. Broderick Thompson was a DNF.

Emma King was the top B.C. racer on the women's side in ninth, with Becca Bermel in 11th and Kailee Darlington 12th.

Geoffrey Richards of the Callaghan Valley Training Centre also represented B.C. in the cross-country relay, with the team finishing third.
