SLRD South 911 service to be active March 15

Pemberton, N'Quatqua, D'Arcy, Birken, Britannia Beach to benefit

The Squamish-Lillooet Regional District has finally made it official - March 15 is the date that many of its southern communities get 911 service.

As it stands, people in communities including Pemberton, Mount Currie, N'Quatqua, D'Arcy, Xit'olacw, Britannia Beach and Furry Creek have to dial a series of different numbers to get emergency services.

That changes in mid-March, as these communities will have their 911 calls re-routed to hub-operated EComm in the Lower Mainland. Caller information will be displayed on a computer screen for a 911 operator, although callers still have to confirm phone numbers and locations, particularly for people on cell phones.

If your community doesn't currently get fire protection, 911-service will not change that. People are asked to call the regional district for clarification on whether or not they get fire service.

The regional district recommends that residents clearly display street addresses so they can be seen easily from the highway. Reflective signs work best.
