Winner of 3PO announced

Emily Carr grads take the prize

Emily Carr grad Nathan Gilliss won the Pique -sponsored 3PO video competition Sunday night for his short film "The Man and the Mammoth."

It's a humorous stop-animation short about an arctic hunter that discovers skiing. It won the praise of judges and uproarious applause from the audience, earning Gilliss and his filmmaking partner Callum Patterson A $3500 grand prize.

Gilliss says the film took three months to complete. It's currently on YouTube and Gilliss says the 3PO competition is a far more "glamorous" way for people to watch his work.

"To hear a room full of people (respond) was really exciting. It felt really good," he says.

"It feels really good to have something you worked on for so long be recognized and appreciated by a big group of people."

The two graduated from Emily Carr in 2009 and have been collaborating together as Public Ritual ever since. Gilliss says he's not sure how exactly they'll spend the money but it'll likely go toward new equipment for future projects.
