With Whistler entering its slower spring season and the village quiet, the RCMP took to the roads last week. The result was a rash of impaired driver files and other driving offences.
On April 27 at 4 p.m. an RCMP road check clocked a southbound vehicle just south of Whistler travelling 134 km/h in a 90 km/h zone. The RCMP stopped the vehicle, and detected an odor of marijuana. After finding a roach, the police arresting the occupants of the vehicle and conducted a search, finding another container of marijuana. A 27-year old from Victoria was given a 24-hour driving suspension and his vehicle was impounded for seven days in accordance with new provincial laws.
At 2:18 a.m. on April 29, the police stopped a driver that tried to evade police by turning his lights off. The RCMP detected an odor of alcohol and the driver said he had a beer about seven hours earlier. However, the male - a 23-year-old from Vancouver with a Russian driver's licence - failed the approved screening device, resulting in a 90-day driving prohibition and 30-day impoundment.
On April 29 at 5:45 p.m., a speed trap on Highway 99 at Brandywine clocked a pickup truck at 138 km/h. The police stopped him for speeding excessively, resulting in a seven-day vehicle impound. The driver, a 28-year-old male from West Vancouver, also tested in the "warn" range, resulting in a three-day driving prohibition.
Around midnight on Apr. 30, the police saw a vehicle to the south of the village driving in the shoulder of the opposite lane. The driver, a 23-year-old male from Whistler, failed his roadside test, resulting in a 90-day driving prohibition and 30-day impound.
On Apr. 30 at 10:45 p.m. an RCMP check at Hillcrest stopped a northbound vehicle. The driver, a 32-year-old with an Australian licence, provided a sample in the "warn" range, resulting in the three-day prohibition and three-day impound.
Less than an hour later as the road check was wrapping up the RCMP spotted a vehicle driving roughly 90 km/h in a 60-km/h zone. They followed the vehicle and saw it cross the centre before the pulled it over. A 30-year-old Whistler male failed his test, resulting a 90-day prohibition and 30-day impound.
At 10:17 p.m. the police observed a vehicle pulling out of the Alpine Meadows subdivision, and then try to evade police by pulling into the parking lot at Meadow Park. When the police drove up the driver was walking down the path. They called him back, and a 44-year-old Whistler male then refused to provide a breath sample. He was charged with refusal and issued an immediate roadside prohibition.
