The Ministry of Transportation and Highways’ ongoing rock slope stabilization program begins another season on Monday, April 12, 23 km north of Horseshoe Bay at Porteau Camp Bluffs. "This is the second phase of stabilization work on the bluffs, with the initial phase having been completed last year," said Peter Seelig, project manager. Full three-four hour mid-day closures will occur on two mid-week days the last week in April for rock blasting. Exact dates haven’t been determined yet because the contract for the work has just been awarded. The dates will be advertised. In addition to the two lengthy closures, motorists are asked to plan their travel around the following highway delays and temporary closures: random delays of approximately 15 minutes in mid-April through May; scheduled 30-minute closures, during the second half of each work hour, in the last two weeks of April and the first week of May;. Hours of work affecting traffic will be limited to 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 9 a.m. to noon Friday. There will be no closures or delays on Canadian or American long weekends. A contract for the work was awarded to Murrin Construction Ltd. of North Vancouver, for $208,000. Work will include rock scaling, drilling and blasting, as well as installing rock bolts and mesh. The project is expected to take eight weeks, however traffic impact outside the above schedule will be minimal.
