Moving Chords Youth Showchoir Wins Award at Kiwanis Music Festival The Moving Chords Youth Showchoir took top spot at a weekend Kiwanis Music Festival in Vancouver. The youth showchoir, made up of 8-14 year olds from Whistler and Squamish, won first place in the Open Category of the Musical Theatre Division on Sunday, April 25 at the festival. Moving Chords choir directors Coleen Koop of Squamish and Sadie Culliford of Whistler were very pleased with the result, but in the spirit of the Kiwanis Festivals, they were more pleased with the effort the participants put in to preparing for the festival. "They have worked hard for this," said Culliford. The Moving Chords Youth Showchoir have performed in Whistler and Squamish. The choir backed up popular family entertainer Fred Penner when he was in Whistler last November for his Christmas concert. Kiwanis Music Festivals are well known for providing the opportunity for performers to develop skills and to have those performance skills constructively evaluated. "This is such a positive experience for these kids," added Culliford. "They have a performance goal to work toward and then they receive very constructive feedback on their skills. Winning this is obviously a plus, but being involved is the important thing." Aspiring showchoir performers can register for the popular summer choir camps put on by Koop and Culliford.
