Interfor protesters mark month anniversary of Elaho confrontation About 30 protesters, some of them dressed as trees and bears, set up shop outside of the International Forest Products Ltd (Interfor) head office in Vancouver on Oct. 16, to mark the one-month anniversary since Interfor loggers allegedly destroyed a protest camp in the Stoltmann Wilderness Area Sept. 15. Several protesters were allegedly assaulted in the attack, which is still being investigated by the RCMP. "Basically, we made a lot of noise, tied up traffic, danced around in our costumes, and then marched down to the Chilean embassy to show our support for the U'wa Indians," says protester Mike Vessey. The U'wa are threatening a mass suicide if construction of a mining road into their territory is not stopped. "We made the news, so I guess you can say it was a huge success." Protesters are vowing to continue to impede Interfor until the old growth trees in the Upper Elaho Valley are saved.
